<image:caption>I just finished playing with the SF Opera on their June 27, 2025 Pride Concert, featuring singers like Nikola Printz, Jamie Barton, and Brian Mulligan, led by Maestro Robert Mollicone. This concert was a great contribution to Pride Month, and a testament to how much more we all can accomplish when we work together - rather than work against each other. It's a pleasure to play with this orchestra. Their playing, sound, timing, intonation, and sense of ensemble is a wonder to behold - players, singers, and a solid crew working together to present great music. Dan Feiszli laid down solid grooves on the electric bass; a great time was had by all!</image:caption>

<image:caption>It's always a delight to play this music. The composition itself is an incredible piece of work: structure, melodic and rhythmic ideas, development, and imaginative orchestration - I'm running out of superlatives! Regarding the orchestration: the fourth movement (Nachtmusik IV) has both guitar and mandolin added to the texture. I played the guitar part; my long-time friend and colleague Howard Kadis played the mandolin part. This movement has a very dream-like quality to it. The orchestral sound gets sparser and quieter as we near the end; during the last few measures you hear the clarinet softly trilling towards the final F chord, with only two mutes horns, bass clarinet, and guitar as support. The clarinet finally resolves to the last note - and we let the sound slowly die away to silence. That last fermata is marked ersterbend / morendo : "dying away".</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is the stage setup for the Walt Disney "The Sound of Magic" concert with the San Francisco Symphony at Davies Hall this past weekend. Disney clips from the last 100 years, with live music - fun for everyone! The orchestrators came up with some great harp / guitar interplay; I think the harp should be a permanent part of the rhythm section! Jieyin Wu was in the harp chair for these concerts; it was a real pleasure working with her. And the rest of the orchestra played wonderfully, as always. Sarah Hicks conducted.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Terrific movie, cast, and music (composed by David Arnold) - and the iconic James Bond theme - known to guitarists and Bond fans worldwide! The James Bond theme itself was composed by Monty Norman; John Barry did the film arrangement. Unlike many previous Bond films, this arrangement happens during the end credits and is played in its entirety. This image, taken by Lisa Zadek from Box A in Davies Hall, illustrates the situation on stage much better than my usual snapshot of the guitar, amp, and music stand. The guitar chair and the electric bass chair are in front of the percussion section, just below the lower left corner of the movie screen. Dan Smith played Fender bass and upright. It's always a pleasure to work with Dan; we really enjoyed ourselves playing this score. Jake Nissley (drums), John Wilson (piano), and the entire San Francisco Symphony - the house was rocking! The guitar setup for this film was very basic: 1 guitar, 3 different sounds. Distortion-lead for the solo lines and power chords in the opening sequence ("You Know My Name", written by Chris Cornell and David Arnold), and in a few other spots; clean tremolo in a couple of spots, and for the actual James Bond theme: clean sound, treble up all the way, volume full up, played ponticello on the bridge pickup. The music is marked "Dirty twang". I used my brown Frankenstrat (Kinman P-90s). The original recording of the James Bond theme was recorded on June 21,1962. Vic Flick played the guitar part. <image:caption>This was my office this week. Why banjo, you may ask? A new arrangement of Jingle Bell Rock....which started out in Dixieland style with solo banjo for 8 bars. Then orchestra for a bit. Then it turned into a rock version with distorted lead guitar solo licks...not exactly like the Bobby Helms original 1957 country / rockabilly version! Another interesting day in show business! That's Scott Pingel's bass right behind the guitar; on the left you can see the neck of his Modulus 6-string electric. Right behind the electric bass is Artie Storch's drum kit. Capathia Jenkins and Paul DeSare were the terrific vocalists; they sang a mix of holiday songs, including arrangements of Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra tunes, and many others as well. The SF Symphony Chorus filled the hall with their huge and lovely sound, and the orchestra played wonderfully, as always. It's always a treat to play with musicians of this caliber. A good time was had by everyone. Happy holidays to all!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Gallery - Gibson 335 - West Side Story</image:title>
<image:caption>This was a particularly interesting gig. I used my (new, at the time) AxeFX II, with an open-back 12” cabinet and the closed-back 12” Celestion cabinet (both Mesa Boogie). The SFSO sound crew found the sweet spot and placed the mic accordingly. I used my mid-60s Gibson 335 (the original Humbuckers replaced with comparable Bartolinis). That 335 always fits in well sound-wise with a large acoustic orchestra…probably because it’s practically an acoustic instrument itself. Way back in 1977 or so I played West Side Story at SF State on that 335. The orchestra was led by Bennett Friedman. Ed McClary (drums), Karla Eckholm (bassoon), and Max Pricco (reed doubles) were there as well. And many other folks…</image:caption>

<image:caption>January 25, 2020 The Pixar show just happened in Modesto, with some new material from Coco, Finding Dory, the Incredibles 2, and more. The Coco music, in particular, had some very nice nylon-string guitar bits. Pixar music is really fun and challenging to play. Tim Roberts was also playing guitar on the gig, as well many old and new colleagues of mine. Ryan Murray did a terrific job leading the orchestra and holding it all together. It’s always a bit unusual when some members of the orchestra are on click track (as was the rhythm section in this case), but the rest of the orchestra was doing without. Syncing to a film always works best when everyone is on the click, IMHO. But it all worked out fine; a good time was had by all.</image:caption>

Shoreline is always an adventure: big stage, huge crowd, great sound system, Jumbotrons...the whole magilla. That's bassist Bill Ritchen and me, seated just in front of the percussion section in the middle left side of the picture. That's Capathia in the bright blue dress, totally rocking the place. <image:caption>This arrangement utilizes 2 violins, 2 mandolins, viola, banjo, violoncello and mandocello. An earlier version of this arrangement was recorded for in the early 1990s by the Modern Mandolin Quartet (of which I was a member at the time, playing mandocello), and the Turtle Island String Quartet. The MMQ / TISQ version was an arranging collaboration between me and Paul Binkley (mandola player for the MMQ). I reworked the arrangement and rerecorded it in Oakland, California in 2019. During the recording process, we often referred to this arrangement as the: Polina! : ) The musicians are: Nadya Tichman - Violin I Polina Sedukh - Violin II Emily Onderdonk - Viola Miriam Perkoff - Violoncello John Imholz - Mandolins, banjo, and mandocello Mastering: John Cuniberti Artwork: Marienplatz - 17 April 2019, by Fanya Sandrine Imholz</image:caption>

There were also three female backup singers on several tunes. Seal played guitar , too - he accompanied himself in a solo version of "Crazy", and in a few other songs as well. He has a custom Telecaster-style guitar; a very nice instrument. And just upstage of the rhythm section: the San Francisco Symphony. A lot of sound was rolling off the stage on Thursday night! The most excellent Davies Hall stage and sound crew made sure it all came off without a hitch. Best crew ever, IMO.</image:caption>

At a pause in the show I told the audience that my friend Wendy was being a good parent and supporting the arts by bringing her as-yet unborn child to a mandolin quartet concert. Wendy stood up and took a big-belly 6-months-along bow to much applause. A few months later Wendy was happy to tell me the news that her daughter was named "Amanda Lynn".</image:caption>

      <image:title>Galerie - Pixar in Modesto</image:title>
